Inaugurated in 2007, the Asian Film Awards (AFA) celebrates excellence in Asian cinema through the annual presentation of awards to the many diverse talents and films that make up the dynamic film industries of the region. Awards night is a spectacular gathering of celebrities, industry professionals and the media that highlights and publicizes the year’s achievements in Asian movies. Held in Hong Kong for the past seven years, the 8th move to one of Asia’s fastest growing entertainment hubs, Macau. With this historic move, the AFA moves one step closer to its long-term plan of being held in different cities of Asia and reflecting its broad reach across the entire region.
Since the 4th AFA in 2010, DotAsia has been a technical partner for the awards supporing the production of the official website — www.asianfilmawards.asia — as well as online screening for overseas jury members and an online voting system for millions of fans voting around the world for their favourite actors and actresses. In 2013, DotAsia’s role has expanded as Asian Film Awards’ Honorary Secretariat. With utmost importance in its contribution to the AFA, it carries out the diverse day to day operation of the academy ranging from establishing and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders, administrative operation and event management.
About The Asian Film Awards Academy
Established in Hong Kong in late 2013, the Asian Film Awards Academy aims to promote and develop Asian cinema, its talents and audiences. In an unprecedented landmark collaboration, the three long-established and major international film festivals in Asia, that is Busan, Hong Kong and Tokyo have joined together as the founding members of the Asian Film Awards Academy. Together, they will provide an impact and influence that will promote Asian cinema through the annual flagship Asian Film Awards, and year-round initiatives such as professional exchanges, mentorship and development programmes for young filmmakers, and strategies for regional and international audience development.
Asian Film Awards Academy members will come from all over Asia. They will be drawn from all past nominees and winners at the Asian Film Awards. Additional members who are prominent in their field may also be inducted into the Asian Film Awards Academy. Members will be given voting rights for the Asian Film Awards and also participate in various Academy activities around the region. The Asian Film Awards Academy expresses the increasing global importance and creative strength of the cinemas of Asia and will help to unite the industries and talents of this fast-growing region.

Journey to the Fest – Student Visit to the Busan International Film Festival
Application deadline: June 12, 2015 (Friday) Hong Kong time 5:30pm
The Asian Film Awards Academy (AFAA), with the support of Create Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Film Development Fund of the Hong Kong SAR Government and in association with one of its Founding Organizations, the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), will organize a Student Visit, titled Journey to the Fest, to the BIFF and its associated Asian Project Market (APM) in Busan, South Korea during October 1 to 10, 2015. This is to give Hong Kong film and media students the opportunity to develop their skills and enrich their outlook and experience through visiting an international film festival and networking with their peers and professionals from around the world. Students on the Visit will participate in the opening and closing festival events, talks, attend networking events and watch films. The student group will be led by AFAA staff and comprise 12 students chosen by application and nomination.

The 8th Asian Film Awards (AFA) was held on March 27th, 2014, at the City of Dreams in Macau. A total of 14 awards and the Lifetime Achievement Award, the night’s most prestigious award, were presented by screen stars, celebrities and artistes of the industry.
Distinguished director Mr Peter Ho-sun Chan led the jury panel as the jury president. The jury panel was made up of experienced film professionals from all over Asia and included celebrity jurors Mr Donnie Yen and Ms Carina Lau. The jury panel was tasked to examine the works of all the nominees and voted to decide the winner of each category.
Mr Wong Kar Wai’s martial arts film, THE GRANDMASTER, topped the AFA nominees’ list with 11 nominations out of 14 categories and scooped up the awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Cinematographer, Best Production Designer, Best Composer and Best Costume Designer, while Zhang Zi yi was also crowned the Best Actress with her remarkable performance in the movie. Indian actor Irrfan Khan with THE LUNCHBOX won Best Actor, and the film also claimed the Best Screenwriter. The incredible acting skills of HUANG Bo and YEO Yann Yann earned them Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress awards for their roles in NO MAN’S LAND and ILO ILO, while JIANG Shuying from SO YOUNG won for Best Newcomer. The 8th Asian Film Awards Academy conferred the Life-Time Achievement Award on Taiwanese celebrated director Hou Hsiao-hsien for his contribute to the film industry.
